In November 1943, Mary and Nancy Manning opened the Ten-Thirty Gallery in Cleveland, Ohio.

Nancy, my grandmother, did not stay with the gallery long--she had other roles to fill and sometimes other galleries to run, but I remembered the name. As I set out to make a website of my own art, it seemed like a lonely place to deliver a monologue--my name and paintings floating in the wide world of the web saying who-knows-what to who-knows-whom. The name anchors me in an older conversation about the role of art in the everyday lives of women and men. It is a conversation that I hope to continue.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer's announcement of the opening of Mary and Nancy's gallery reads:

The gallery is pleasantly proportioned, superbly lighted and spacious enough so that objects in the constantly changing arrangements may always be presented to advantage.

These seem like excellent first goals for this new incarnation of the Ten-Thirty Gallery--to be pleasantly proportioned, superbly lighted and presented to advantage.

Thanks for visiting with me for a minute,

Clementine
